SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP FINAL: RUTHERGLEN GLENCAIRN STARS CAN BE REAL HEROES, SAYS BOSS

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey has told his players to write themselves into history by winning the Scottish Junior Cup on Friday.

Harvey’s side are in their first final in 48 years as they take on Cumnock at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, and says his players can tell their grandkids about it if they lift the famous old trophy.

And he says Premier League Cumnock being favourites suits him down to a tee.

Harvey said: “It’s massive. I’ve told the boys they’ve already made history as a squad by making it to the final – think how good it will be if they actually win it.

“There are not many people who get that opportunity in their life – it’s there for us, we know it is.

“We’ve got our strikers back playing, and we don’t concede a lot of goals.

“There are only two teams with a better goals-against in the West of Scotland League First Division, and that’s Gartcairn and St Cadoc’s, who finished first and second, so that shows that we’re tight at the back.

“With that in mind, we’re always going to have a fighting chance.”

Cumnock finished ninth in the Premier League, while Glens achieved the same in the First Division, with the Ayrshire side red-hot favourites in Cumbernauld.

Harvey said: “Cumnock being favourites takes the pressure off of us, 100 per cent – if anything, it’s the best thing to happen to us,

“We actually perform better when we’re not favourites, and I’ve said this for many a year.

“We seem to perform against the likes of Auchinleck Talbot, Pollok, Gartcairn, St Cadoc’s.

“We took points off everybody at the top of the league this season, because the players know they need to up their game, so I’m more than happy to be underdogs.

“If we win this cup, in years to come when your grandkids are running about, they’ll be able to say ‘my granddad won the Scottish Cup with Glencairn’.

“Make sure you turn up on Friday night and don’t let yourself down.”
