NEWCASTLE UNITED HEADLINES: HARRISON ASHBY ON BRINK OF TOON MOVE AND SVEN BOTMAN OPENS UP

The signing of Anthony Gordon from Everton dominated the headlines following its announcement on Sunday afternoon, but there was plenty going on away from the hectic transfer whirlwind, too.

Here's your round-up of Newcastle United headlines for Sunday, January 29.

Ashby deal agreed

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign West Ham United youngster Harrison Ashby, according to reports. Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth claims the Magpies have agreed a fee in the region of £3million including add-ons.

The Hammers have reportedly inserted a sell-on clause into the deal with the Scotland youth international on his way to Tyneside for a medical. David Moyes' side look to have finally given the green light for Ashby to move to St. James' Park having rejected a move in the summer.

Botman talks Newcastle 'family'

Sven Botman has opened up about his “warm” experience at Newcastle United so far. The 23-year-old described his new surroundings as family-like - vindicating his decision to choose St James’ Park over AC Milan.

“It is a very warm club, really a family,” he told Only The Best, relayed by Voetbal Zone. “The new owners (Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghosoussi) really surprise me; they are at the club very often. Every fortnight anyway.

"Then they come over, take the kids and go and watch (the match). They absolutely love that. The other month we were at a training camp in Saudi Arabia and we visited two other owners in their palace. Bizarre. (It is) really a whole other world.”

Wilson cites Toon turnaround

Callum Wilson has highlighted the Magpies' drastic turnaround while advising podcast co-host Michail Antonio. Reports have linked the West Ham United striker with a move in recent weeks.

Toon number nine Wilson urged Antonio to consider all options after he called Everton a “sinking ship” earlier on their show. He told the Footballer’s Football podcast: “We (Newcastle) had a situation last season where people looked upon us as a project and we were in a relegation battle at the time.

“We signed players like Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood… these guys put their careers at risk. Especially Trippier, coming from Atletico Madrid and playing European football. I applaud (that). You go there, help the team stay in the division and then reap the rewards off the back of it."

Newcastle lacking Gusto

Newcastle made a late attempt to sign Chelsea new boy Malo Gusto, according to reports. Bobby Vincent of our sister title Football London claims the Magpies made an approach at the 11th hour to sign the Lyon defender.

Nonetheless, it was Graham Potter's Chelsea that won the race to sign the young defender. Gusto has signed a six-and-half year contract at Stamford Bridge, but will spend the rest of the season on loan with the Ligue 1 side.

Gordon's good deed

Anthony Gordon’s arrival has polarised Toon supporters all week. Fans have not forgotten his fiery exchange with Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar during the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Everton in October.

Newcastle, like Everton, is a club submersed in working-class culture. The cotton industry in Liverpool was as strong as shipbuilding on the Tyne and still leaves its imprint on the city to this day.

In recent years, the NUFC Fans Food Bank has received donations on matchdays, with proceeds helping those in the West End of Newcastle. Supporters may have found Gordon a nuisance on the pitch… but his off-field work deserves accreditation.

Last month, in the build-up to Christmas, the youngster selflessly visited his local Asda in Bootle and filled seven trolleys up to help those in need. Food, toiletries and other essentials were bought as Gordon aimed to give back to his community.
