Liverpool have been told they do not need to sign Matheus Cunha, as the Wolves forward continues to be linked with a string of top clubs in the Premier League.
The Brazilian continues to impress for Wolves, with 12 Premier League goals to his name this season, including a brilliant strike last time out against Liverpool.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield, but the Reds would not be the only interested party, with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest all touted as possible destinations were he to leave Molineux.
Wolves have made a move to keep hold of him as the striker signed a new contract earlier this month which runs until 2029.
However, that contract includes a release clause worth £60m which is active in the summer, so the fact he has signed a deal does not mean he will still be at Wolves next season.
Chelsea icon Gustavo Poyet does not necessarily think Liverpool should be going after the forward though, especially if they keep hold of Mohamed Salah beyond this season.
The former Sunderland manager sees Arne Slot’s side as looking impressively well balanced right now and does not think they should be making ‘big moves’ unless they have to.
‘I know Liverpool have been linked with Matheus Cunha, but right now, they need nothing!’ Poyet told Makthavare.
‘They’re seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and have a great squad, so I don’t think they need to make any big moves.
‘Cunha is a great player and is having a brilliant season, but all Liverpool have to do is keep winning football matches – which they are.
‘Cunha would improve their squad, but by no means is he essential to Liverpool’s success; they already have everything they need from an attacking standpoint to win the Premier League and major trophies in the future.’
Speaking before the game between Liverpool and Wolves, Slot had already talked Cunha up as a player who could perform for an elite club.
‘He’s a type of player that I’m referring to when I always say, if I compare the leagues, or a league where I’ve worked in and this league,’ said the Dutchman.
‘I don’t know exactly where Wolves are at the moment… 17th, if you go to the Dutch league and look at the 17th [team] there’s no player who could play for Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord.
‘But Matheus Cunha is a quality player and he has the quality to play for one of the top five teams in England.
‘That is also one of the reason why it is so much more difficult to win a game against 17th in England than to win against 17th in Holland.
‘Again, we already saw when we played against them with Gary O’Neil, they had a very good performance back then as well, and him [Cunha] in particular, so we know it’s going to be a tough game on Sunday again.’
