Manchester United are aware of the difficulties of signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer and are likely to pursue other striking targets.

Kane, 29, is on United boss Erik ten Hag’s target list this summer as he is on red alert to sign a central striker at Old Trafford. United are desperate to sign an elite striker while Kane’s contractual situation – his deal at Spurs expires next summer – theoretically opens the door to a potential summer exit.

However, the North London club have no intention of allowing the England captain to leave this summer and are even stronger in their stance of Kane possibly joining a direct rival in the Premier League – which is where the striker would prefer to remain, rather than move abroad.

As highlighted earlier this year by ESPN, there are currently senior figures at United who are aware of the difficulties of dealing with Spurs and chairman Levy, who is seen as a tough negotiator and who would be happy to prolong any transfer saga – which could disrupt United’s summer plans.

It is highlighted how former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and CEO David Gill vowed never to deal with them over incomings again after just clinching the signing of Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs at the eleventh hour of the transfer deadline in the summer window of 2008.

They stayed true to their promise and United have not signed a player from Spurs in 15 years since. Kane may not be the man to break that streak this summer. All clubs, particularly in the Premier League, are aware of the difficulties of prising star players away from Spurs.

That dilemma of whether to even bother negotiating with Levy is now in the corridors of Old Trafford, as highlighted by the Manchester Evening News. United have drawn up a shortlist of attacking talents and are now expecting to sign a striker from outside the Premier League.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is a leading target but his £140million price tag could block a move, while there is great admiration for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos and Mohammed Kudus, the latter of whom Ten Hag coached at Ajax. Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund is a more affordable option being monitored by United.

The club are also in the market for several other positions including central defender, right-back, goalkeeper and an attack-minded midfielder.
