ENGLISH REFEREE ANTHONY TAYLOR ACCOSTED BY ROMA FANS AT BUDAPEST AIRPORT

Anthony Taylor required security to protect him from AS Roma fans at Budapest International Airport as he flew back from the Europa League final that ended with Jose Mourinho confronting him in a car park.

The Premier League referee had angered Mourinho with his decisions at Puskas Arena where six yellow cards were issued to his players and more to his backroom staff on the bench. Sevilla’s winning penalty in the shootout was retaken after being saved, while Roma were denied a spot-kick during the game.

Mourinho launched a verbal attack on Taylor in the car park of the stadium as teams prepared to depart, calling him a “f---ing disgrace” and saying his decisions were “bull----”. Taylor headed to the airport where angry fans chanted at him as he walked through the terminal. The Cheshire official was escorted away from the crowds with one of his party reacting to the supporters.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited, who manage referees in England, said in a statement: “PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport. “We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final. We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family.”
