However, it was always going to be tough to draw too many conclusions in Monte-Carlo given the unique nature of F1's most iconic street circuit.

Mercedes boss has already warned that it could take some time before the German outfit will be able to truly enjoy the fruits of their labour, saying: "We will collect more data in Barcelona, but I don't expect us to clear Ferrari and Aston Martin there either. It is about understanding what does this car do now and how do we set it up?

"We are good at grinding away. Last year, the package was terrible at the beginning of the season and we won a race in Interlagos, so we will get there."
