THE 23 AMERICANS PLAYING IN EUROPE’S MAJOR LEAGUES IN 2023-24 & HOW THEY’RE FARING

Players from AC Milan, Fulham and Juventus are among the top United States stars who have been thriving in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

In total, there are 23 Americans who are playing in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1. It’s fair to say that some have been doing better than others during this campaign.

We’ve taken a closer look at each player and have assessed all 23 United States players currently active across Europe’s top leagues.

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic has lived up to his ‘Captain America’ nickname this season as the 25-year-old has been on fire since making the switch to AC Milan in the summer.

While the winger showed some glimpses of quality during his stint with Chelsea, most people would agree that he made the right decision to leave in the summer.

With nine goals and six assists in Serie A alone, he’s currently averaging a goal contribution every 132.2 minutes. That’s some going. He’s also scored some absolute worldies this season too.

Antonee Robinson

The 26-year-old full-back has been one of Fulham’s most consistent performers since his arrival in 2020. This season has been no different.

Robinson has started in all but one of Fulham’s Premier League matches and he’s also chipped in with an impressive six assists.

Based on Whoscored average match ratings, Joao Palhinha is the only Fulham player to have outperformed Robinson this year.

Weston McKennie

After spending the second half of last season on loan with Leeds United, McKennie has since re-established himself as part of the Juventus starting XI.

The 25-year-old has often played in central midfield, although he has also done a few shifts down the right-hand side. With seven assists in Serie A so far, McKennie has been among Juventus’ most consistent performers.

Jordan Siebatcheu

The towering forward joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan from Union Berlin in the summer. Despite missing a chunk of the season through injury, Siebatcheu has still done well.

In the Bundesliga, he has five goals and three assists and he’s also scored a couple of goals in the DFB-Pokal too.

John Anthony Brooks

It’s been more than two years since Brooks last featured for the national team and it remains to be seen if he will be granted another opportunity on the international stage.

The 31-year-old certainly has a wealth of experience behind him with over 240 Bundesliga appearances under his belt. For Hoffenheim this season, Brooks has started in 18 of their 26 league matches.

Folarin Balogun

Following his tremendous loan spell with Reims last season, Monaco snapped up the Arsenal academy graduate in the summer.

Balogun hasn’t quite showcased his best form of late as the striker has only scored six league goals so far. With that being said, Monaco boss Adi Hutter still thinks there’s more to come from the 22-year-old.

“He has to adapt. He’s a young player that I have spoken with a lot. In a career, you’re not always at your best peak, so we have to accept this,” Hutter told Get French Football News.

“Everyone can see he can do better. I am happy with him. He’s a very professional player. He does everything in possession. This is football sometimes.”

Lennard Maloney

Maloney has done a solid job at the base of midfield for Bundesliga outfit Heidenheim. He’s won a total of 38 tackles this season and has started in 23 league matches so far.

Chris Richards

The 23-year-old has been a regular in the Crystal Palace XI since the start of December. In total, he’s racked up 1641 minutes of football this season which is decent going.

His standout moment of the campaign came during Crystal Palace’s 3-0 thumping of Burnley as the defender managed to open the scoring with a well-timed header.

Matt Turner

Turner started the campaign as Nottingham Forest’s first-choice goalkeeper, but following a bad run of form, he lost his starting spot to Odysseas Vlachodimos and then to Matz Sels.

Based on Turner’s post-shot expected goals, he has conceded 5.9 more goals than he should have in the league. That’s the biggest underperformance of any Premier League goalkeeper this season. Ouch.

Kevin Paredes

The young wide-man has often been used as an impact substitute for Wolfsburg this season. Of his 22 Bundesliga appearances, 11 of them have come from the bench.

In 1063 minutes of football this season, Paredes has chipped in with two goals.

Luca Koleosho

In any otherwise grim season for Burnley, Koleosho has been a sign of hope for the future. The 19-year-old has bags of potential and Vincent Kompany’s side did well to prize him away from Espanyol in the summer.

He has missed the last few months of action with a knee injury, but when fully fit, he is capable of being a game changer for the Clarets.

Tim Ream

You have to commend Ream for still doing the business for Fulham in the Premier League at 36 years old. The experienced defender is a commanding voice at the back and continues to be an important player for Marco Silva’s side.

Emmanuel Sabbi

Considering Sabbi has often been used as an impact substitute, he’s done fairly well to score four goals in 994 minutes for Ligue 1 outfit Le Havre this season.

Speaking to AmericanSoccerNow earlier in the campaign, Sabbi opened up on his move to France: “It’s been amazing – the weather, people, club, town, and teammates have all been great.

“My teammates have welcomed me with open arms into the team as one of their own; the staff and players are also great and down to earth. The town and fans are wonderful especially at Stade Oceane.”

Timothy Weah

Following his switch to Juventus in the summer, Weah has slowly been getting to grips with his new surroundings. He has featured in 24 league matches, although two-thirds of those games were as a substitute.

The 24-year-old has some big names to learn from in the Juventus dressing room and he’ll no doubt be keen to nail down a consistent starting spot in the near future.

Luca de la Torre

The 25-year-old midfielder is now in his second season with Celta Vigo. He has featured in the majority of league matches for the Spanish club this season and has chipped in with five goal contributions so far.

Giovanni Reyna

Reyna didn’t get much of a sniff at Borussia Dortmund during the first half of the season and he was subsequently loaned out to Nottingham Forest for the second half of the campaign.

Given the number of players Nuno Espirito Santo has to choose from, Reyna’s chances with Forest so far have been fairly limited.

All three of his Premier League appearances have come from the bench and he has only played a total of 38 minutes. Fingers crossed we get to see a bit more from him in the coming months.

Joe Scally

The 21-year-old has been a regular starter for Borussia Monchengladbach and he has been used in several positions. Whether utilised as a full-back or centre-half, Scally seems happy enough to fill in wherever is needed.

Auston Trusty

Trusty has previously proven himself to be a good defender, but being part of a Sheffield United defence that have shipped 74 goals this season can’t have been good for his confidence.

Yunus Musah

Earlier in the season, AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli described Musah as a “complete player” who is capable of playing in many different roles.

The 21-year-old has often been used in central midfield, although he has also been used on the right-hand side and in a more attacking role at times.

Brenden Aaronson

Leeds United fans had high hopes for Aaronson last season, but things didn’t click for the American at Elland Road. Following a subpar debut season, the 23-year-old joined Union Berlin on a season-long loan deal.

Aaronson has produced a few moments of quality, but for the most part, he has struggled in Germany. As of writing, the attacking midfielder only has two goal contributions to show from 22 Bundesliga appearances.

Paxten Aaronson

After not getting much of a kick with Eintracht Frankfurt during the first half of the season, Aaronson was sent on loan to Vitesse for the second half of the season.

Brenden’s younger brother has made a steady start with his new club and has already scored twice in six Eredivisie matches.

Timothy Chandler

The experienced right-back, who was last capped by the USA in 2016, is now into his 10th season with Eintracht Frankfurt.

He played his first minutes of the 2023-24 Bundesliga campaign in injury time against Wolfsburg in February and assisted Omar Marmoush’s late equaliser. A goal contribution every seven minutes? That’s gotta be the best in Europe.

Tyler Adams

The USMNT captain’s injury last season coincided with Leeds’ form falling off a cliff. He didn’t play a minute of the relegation run-in, and departed the club alongside Aaronson in the summer – only he secured a permanent move back to the Premier League, signing for Bournemouth.

There were real hopes that Adams would make himself a lynchpin of Andoni Iraola’s midfield, but a recurrence of that hamstring problem has stopped him from pushing on this year.

He finally made his league debut as a substitute during Bournemouth’s rollercoaster win over Luton in March 2024.
