SWINDON TOWN PUT TROUBLES BEHIND THEM WITH BIG VICTORY TO BE AWARDED LEAGUE TWO TOTW

Swindon Town picked up their first victory of the League Two season by thrashing Newport County 4-0 after a first-half blitz which seen them race into a four-goal lead. This tally surpassed their total of just three goals in their opening five matches and the performance sees them awarded The Deck’s League Two Team of The Week.

Swindon Town take the award from Port Vale, who were led to a big win over Newport County thanks to an impressive display from Lorent Tolaj.

Swindon Town 4-0 Newport County

The scoreline was kind to Newport County as Swindon Town opened up the away side at will and on another occasion would have won this game by six or seven. It was Peterborough United loanee Kabongo Tshimanga who opened the scoring with a beautiful swivel and finish after just four minutes to open his account for the club.

The 27-year-old has been prolific at non-league level but will be looking to prove he is capable of scoring in the EFL during his loan spell and he was joined in a front two by Paul Glatzel, who was also on the scoresheet. The former Liverpool academy prospect should have had a hat-trick but was denied by Nick Townsend in the Newport County goal.

Mark Kennedy is the 7th permanent manager at Swindon Town since November 2020 in a turbulent period for the club that has seen promotion and relegation during that spell. The fans have asked for a change in ownership this summer but this result could be the springboard for an improvement on their 19th place finish last season.

Swindon Town’s League Two matches averaged just under 3.5 goals per game in 2023/24 across their 46 fixtures and they conceded 83 times in an underwhelming campaign. Despite conceding eight goals this season, they have an expected goals-against tally of just 5.39, the sixth-best record in the division.

They continued to display a threat in attacking areas and each player put in a shift against Newport County with new arrivals Tunmise Sobowale, Gavin Kilkenny and George Cox impressing to give hope to fans of a better season ahead.

Upcoming Fixtures and Future Prospects

Swindon Town have an opportunity to make it back-to-back wins as they host managerless Carlisle United, who have lost five of their six matches. They have also conceded 14 goals and the Robins’ attackers will be relishing the prospect of a side with just one clean sheet this season. They picked up just one point from two matches against the Cumbrians in 2023/24.

However, a tough away trip to Port Vale will follow, and Swindon Town fans will be under no illusion of the challenges they face this season. They have been busy in the transfer market and have added some quality but a campaign where they are comfortably clear of the relegation zone would be a successful outcome. There is discontent with the ownership and results have not gone to plan to start the new campaign.

Swindon Town have the capabilities to finish in mid-table but the manager will have to settle on a starting XI but judging by the performance in the win over Newport County, that should be a starting point for former Lincoln City manager Kennedy. They have generally been on the front foot in their last three league matches and they should continue to be an entertaining team to watch.

They give up just 9.5 shots per game on average and have caught their opponents offside just 0.7 times per match, the lowest average in League Two. They are on the right track performance-wise but must start turning some of those into wins. After Port Vale, they will face Tranmere Rovers and Harrogate Town, both of whom are sitting in mid-table after six games.
