MANCHESTER UNITED DEFENDER AGREES DEPARTURE BEFORE DEADLINE

Premier League giants Manchester United have agreed a deal with League Two Fleetwood Town to send defender Rhys Bennett to the fourth tier club on loan for the season.

The 20-year-old is reportedly set to undergo a medical at Highbury as he looks to complete a move before tomorrow’s deadline. This will mark the second loan spell for the young defender who spent a period with Stockport County in the latter half of last season’s title winning campaign. However, he was only able to make one appearance, and only appeared in the squad on two further occasions which prompted the Old Trafford outfit to return him to Carrington where he continued to play for the club’s reserve sides.

Manchester United and Bennett will be hoping the second loan spell goes better than the first when he links up with Fleetwood Town. According to Pete O’Rourke, the deal could be completed before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

The Red Devils have added Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to their squad this summer, joining Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelof as senior central defenders meaning game time could be limited.

Fleetwood on the other hand are looking to bounce back after a disastrous 23/24 campaign saw them relegated from League One to the basement of the EFL. They have added the likes of Zech Medley, Matty Virtue, Elliot Bonds, James Bolton and Mark Helm amongst others.

They have had a reasonable start to the League Two season, having remained unbeaten but only won one of their three games, against Grimsby Town on the opening day. They did however manage to knock both West Bromwich Albion and Steve Evans’ Rotherham United out of the EFL Cup.

A good fit for Fleetwood?

For whatever reason Stockport County did not give Bennett a fair shot, so we do not really know much about him in a senior environment. Fleetwood are looking to rebuild and the addition of a quality Premier League youngster willing to prove himself could be a great addition as they look to sure up their defence.
