HUNGARY UPDATE ON BARNABAS VARGA AFTER SERIOUS HEAD INJURY AT EURO 2024

Hungary have confirmed that Barnabas Varga is ‘conscious and in a stable condition’ after he suffered a serious head injury during his nation’s 1-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2024.

The 29-year-old collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the 68th minute and was immediately motionless on the turf.

Varga appeared to land awkwardly on his head and Hungary’s medical team put him in the recovery position straight away.

Hungary’s players looked visibly distressed as they helped stewards hold up blankets to shield Varga from cameras.

BBC commentator Steve Wilson said Liverpool midfielder and Hungary’s captain Dominik Szoboszlai was ‘in tears’.

Hungary’s Football Association has confirmed that Varga is in a stable condition but is likely to undergo surgery.

‘Several bones in Barnabas Varga’s face were broken during the collision during the match, and he also suffered a concussion,’ a statement read.

‘The striker is most likely to undergo surgery. He spends the night in the hospital in Stuttgart.’

Speaking after the game, Hungary head coach Marco Rossi said: ‘In that moment I didn’t realise immediately, then when we saw the players calling the doctors and everything I started to be worried and everyone was really worried.

‘I thought when Barni left the pitch he was already awake, he was okay.

‘So this is very good, the guy is healthy. Of course, he may not be available for the rest of the tournament if we continue, depending on the others at this point. But the most important thing is that he’s healthy.’

In his post-match press conference, Rossi added: ‘Fortunately now we can say Barni is not under any kind of risk. Probably he will have an operation because he suffered a fracture.’

Varga was stretchered off and the game continued as Hungary went on to score a last-gasp winner in injury time to seal a 1-0 victory to eliminate Scotland from the tournament.

When asked about the incident, Gunn said: ‘I thought I had to come, it was a bit painful.

‘Hopefully the guy’s alright. I can’t really remember too much about that one.’

Hungary finished third in Group A and are now waiting to see if their three points will be enough to secure a place in the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Germany finished top of the group following their 1-1 draw with Switzerland, who go through as runners-up.
