ITV pundits felt referee Tim Robinson was right to award Blackburn Rovers a penalty at Sheffield United, but that Jack Robinson was lucky to stay on the pitch later in the first half.
In the eagerly awaited FA Cup quarter-final at Bramall Lane, Rovers were awarded a 22nd minute penalty and Ben Brereton Diaz stepped up to convert from 12 yards. Match official Robinson went over to the VAR screen and penalised Blades man Robinson for handball after Sam Gallagher's close range effort.
Jobi McAnuff and Eni Aluko both felt that was the correct call, with the former saying: "I've got to be honest, I didn't spot it either first time around. I thought it came off Robinson's knee and flicked up, but actually, when you see it from behind the goal - the question is, can he get his hand out of the way? Listen, it's one of those situations where it's harsh, but we see so many these days - the letter of the law. His hand was lower to start with and then it seems to just pop up. For me, ball to hand on that occasion is only going to result in one thing and that's a penalty."
Aluko added: "I suspected this was handball, instinctively. I think, when you see that angle, he does move it and it almost feels like an instinctive save - quite a subtle one. But, he has moved his hand there to save it and I think it's a penalty. It's a good penalty from Brereton Diaz, but I think (Wes) Fotheringham can do better, because he actually gets a hand on it and it's not directly in the corner - but, a good, firm penalty from Brereton Diaz."
And while Robinson escaped a straight red card in that instance, McAnuff in particular felt the defender was fortunate to still be on the field at half-time. He clattered into Ryan Hedges, while on a yellow, but the referee did not brandish a second card and dismiss the Sheffield United man.
"Very, very fortunate," said McAnuff. "I think he is probably still a bit frustrated with the penalty decision which went against him. That, is a second yellow card - any day of the week. Whether the referee feels he has already given the penalty against him, and booked him, that maybe he gives him the benefit of the doubt. But, I certainly felt that should've been a booking."
