EX-SUPER LEAGUE STAR BRYN HARGREAVES' BODY FOUND 'IN WOODLAND OPPOSITE HOME' IN US

US authorities in the area where former Super League forward Bryn Hargreaves resided have been criticised after it was revealed that his body was found in woodland directly opposite where he lived, over a year after he was reported missing.

The former Wigan and St Helens prop went missing in January 2022, with an extensive search launched to find Hargreaves, who had relocated to the US after retiring from rugby league. It emerged over the weekend that his body had finally been found after 14 months.

But it has since been revealed that Hargreaves' body was discovered by 'shed hunters' in woodland not far from his home, leading authorities to come in for criticism about how the search was conducted given how they insisted a 'large-scale' search for Hargreaves had taken place.

Monongalia County Sheriff Perry Palmer said: “A large-scale search of the Cheat Lake area was conducted by members of the Sheriff’s Department, Morgantown Police/Fire Search and Rescue, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mountaineer Area Rescue Group, MECCA 911 (a public safety service), and several individual volunteers’ over a several month period with negative success.”

One local, Michael Weber, responded to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Facebook update of the body being found, writing: “How can you do a ‘large scale search’ and not find his body which was found LITERALLY across the street from Whisper Creek Apartments. Literally ACROSS THE STREET where he lived. But they did a large scale search.'"

Tributes have been made from throughout the world of rugby league since news of Hargreaves' passing was confirmed.
