Chelsea have remained relatively quiet in the 2025 January transfer window as they’re yet to identify prominent transfer targets. But there seems to be some surprising news on the future of Renato Veiga.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that the London side are now expecting the Portuguese defender to leave the club in the winter window and that they have opened the doors for a permanent exit for the 21-year-old. It’s added that they will not loan him out to any club for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
The journalist also claims that Borussia Dortmund have now secured a full agreement with Veiga to join them in the January window
Romano notes that Chelsea are demanding a fee of around £25.2 million for the Portuguese defender’s sale. It’s also stated that they are ready to accommodate and respect Veiga’s decision of wanting to play as a centre-back for the Bundesliga club rather than playing an inverted left-back role for the Blues.
Chelsea only signed the 21-year-old defender from FC Basel in the 2024 summer transfer window, bringing him in to be competition for Marc Cucurella. With Enzo Maresca not being a fan of using Ben Chilwell, he often used Veiga in that left-back spot whenever his side needed to rest or play without the Spaniard.
Veiga made 18 appearances for the Blues across all competitions and even completed 90 minutes in their recent 5-0 hammering of Morecambe in the FA Cup third-round. But it looks like the Portuguese defender wants to play as a centre-back, which he has only done twice in the UEFA Europa Conference League since moving to England.
The 21-year-old, who was hailed for his “incredible maturity” earlier this term, could force Chelsea into signing a new defender in January if he joins Borussia Dortmund.
