CHARLTON ATHLETIC PLAYER SET FOR LEAGUE ONE DEPARTURE

Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Harry Isted is set to join fellow League One side Burton Albion, with a medical expected later this afternoon, according to reports.

The Addicks’s squad transformation under new boss Nathan Jones is well under way. It has seen the high-profile departure of the league’s top goal scorer to Birmingham City as the Welshman looks to move his squad in a different direction.

The club have been linked to several goalkeepers this window after the addition of Will Mannion from Cambridge United with a more experienced head seemingly the target. Birmingham City’s John Ruddy was the initial target, before he linked up with Premier League Newcastle United as a backup option and yesterday it was revealed that former Stoke City and QPR man Asmir Begovic was a target at the start of the window.

Now, according to Richard Cawley, current goalkeeper Isted is set to link up with Burton Albion shortly after they confirmed the addition of Terence Vancooten.

Isted, now 27 only linked up with Charlton in 2023, having moved from Luton Town. He signed a contract for two years, meaning his deal is set to expire at the end of the 24/25 season. He only appeared 23 times for the Addicks, missing from October to January through injury with Ashley Maynard-Brewer appearing in his place.

He has also been on the books of Wealdstone, Barnsley, Stoke City, Oxford City, Southampton and Luton Town.

Goalkeeping makeover for Charlton Athletic

Nathan Jones made it clear pretty early on in the window that he wanted to go a different direction in the goalkeeping department. He made it clear that he wanted to add players with the ability to play at a higher level as well as be ready for now. Mannion came in and was very much touted as a number two to an eventual further addition, one that has yet to arrive.

The high profile chase of Ruddy and the reveal of the interest in Begovic somewhat indicates that Jones wants a reliable pair of hands in goal this upcoming season as he attempts to turn around years of mediocracy at the club to challenge for promotion once again.

Burton Spending Well

Burton Albion only just remained in League One last season but have put their money where their mouth is this year with several key additions that demonstrate their willingness to improve on last season.

Ben Whitfield, Terence Vancooten, Elliott Watt and Dani Orsi are all impressive players for the ability and only represent a small amount of the business done so far.
