ARSENAL STAR WILLIAM SALIBA EXPLAINS WHAT HE THINKS HE'S MISSING TO BECOME 'THE BEST DEFENDER IN THE WORLD'

  • Saliba established as a top defender in Europe
  • Part of best defence in Premier League with Arsenal
  • Believes he must win trophies to be at the top

WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal's colossal defender has made a name for himself in the last two years, shining under head coach Mikel Arteta as the Gunners ran Manchester City close twice for the Premier League title. Saliba's efforts in the backline saw his side concede just 29 goals last season, the best record of any team in the top flight. But the 23-year-old himself says he cannot be considered the best centre-back in Europe until he wins major silverware.

WHAT SALIBA SAID

Speaking to Fox Sports, Saliba said: "I have been on the right track for the past two seasons, especially last season. I am perhaps on my way to becoming the best defender in the world. I think I am one of the best at the moment, but to say that I have to win some titles. I think that is what I am missing right now. If you win titles you are good and if you don't, you can't say you are the best. That's what I believe. I am one of the best in the world."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saliba has matured after returning from Marseille on loan, and at 23 he still has so much of his career ahead of him. There have been a lot of close calls in the last few years when it comes to winning trophies but the ultimate prize is still missing from his trophy cabinet, despite Arsenal being an incredibly good team under Arteta.

WHAT NEXT FOR SALIBA AND ARSENAL?

The Frenchman will have to be at his absolute best if Arsenal are to overcome City away from home on Sunday. Erling Haaland is in the form of his life for Pep Guardiola's side and the champions are yet to slip up in 2024-25. Having conceded just five goals away from home since the start of 2024, this is the ultimate test for Saliba and Co.
