ARNE SLOT DISCOVERS LIVERPOOL'S SUMMER PLANS AS NEW TRANSFER GURU MAKES BOLD ADMISSION

Liverpool chief Richard Hughes has opened up on the club's transfer plans this summer ahead of the 2024-25 season as Arne Slot officially gets to work at Anfield.

The Reds are beginning a new chapter without long-serving former boss Jurgen Klopp, who departed at the end of last season following nine years on Merseyside, with Dutchman Slot facing the media for the first time alongside Hughes.

Hughes has just started work as Liverpool's new sporting director after 10 years working as Bournemouth's technical director - and he gave Slot a glimpse of how much transfer activity there might be this summer.

The 44-year-old also made a bold admission about the squad as he outlined areas of improvement needed - having fallen away from last season's title-chasers Manchester City and Arsenal and eventually finishing third.

"It's been to great work with Arne," Hughes said at the press conference. "We both had jobs to finish. Since then, we've been in communication daily. Preparing for the transfer window. We'll know more as we go.

"The squad we've inherited is very talented but we need to improve and we need to improve on the training pitch first and foremost. We will be opportunistic if we can."

Hughes also touched on the club's decision to appoint Slot from Feyenoord and said it was his attractive style of football that aided his cause the most.

"[It was] the playing style that attracted us. On all the metrics, Arne's Feyenoord team came out really well. [They are] attributes we would welcome here at Liverpool. It depends on the players you have. This style of playing that Arne has been successful with is the most attractive to watch in my opinion. There is a duty here to play that kind of football."

Slot, meanwhile, outlined his desire to build on the successes under Klopp - admitting he had "big shoes to fill".

He said: "Big shoes to fill but you inherit a squad with a winning culture. One of the reasons to come here is I feel we have a really good team. You want to work at a club with good players and an opportunity to win something.

"The past shows Liverpool can win trophies. There is an opportunity to win something. I like to win and at this club there is an opportunity to win."

The Reds have a big summer in front of them as they look to bolster their squad and establish themselves as one of the favourites to win the title - having been linked with a number of big name talents.

Slot is said to be looking out for a new winger and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been a name regularly tipped for a switch to Anfield following some impressive seasons at Napoli, and glimpses of quality at Euro 2024 too.

The 45-year-old arrives in the Premier League having won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in 2022-23 - only their second title triumph this century - as well as the Dutch Cup last season.
