10 PLAYERS LEAVE LIVERPOOL AS ARNE SLOT BEGINS OVERHAUL IN POST-JURGEN KLOPP ERA

The 10 out-of-contract Liverpool players have now left Anfield as life under Arne Slot begins, with Thiago among the big names to exit.

The Reds previously confirmed that a cluster of players, all of whom had their contracts expiring at the end of June, would not remain at Anfield and have been left to seek pastures new. Slot has recently begun work and is in the midst of casting his eye over the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.

Thiago, signed from Bayern Munich back in 2020, has been allowed to leave after an injury-hit period on Merseyside. Much was expected of the Spaniard, who delivered in bursts, but never consistently hit the heights expected of him.

Joel Matip is the other major name who has been allowed to leave. The Cameroonian started in the Champions League final success back in 2019 and was one of a number of players who partnered Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence. He however, like Thiago, had consistent injury problems.

Klopp had said he hoped Liverpool would give Matip a new deal following his years of service, but that hasn't been the case. "I'm pretty sure the club will show their class, just as they should," he said. "I'm pretty sure they have told Joel already whatever happens, as long as he's injured everything's fine, and now we have to make a decision with Joel how it looks after that.

"That's a normal thing to do but he deserves all the support from us, and he will get it. I would say so [that he deserves a new deal], but it's not my decision. I cannot sign the papers."

Elsewhere academy stars Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf and Mateusz Musialowski have all been allowed to leave. The trio have all played for the senior side with Lewis making his first-team debut in an FA Cup replay with Shrewsbury Town in February 2020 but has spent the last four seasons out on loan. Frauendorf's first start also came against Shrewsbury. Musialowski first run out was in March of this year.

Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington are more academy players whose time at Liverpool has come to an end. They will have to seek employment elsewhere.

Slot has several other big calls to make in his first summer. The futures of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez remain points of discussion. Salah could still command a huge fee and is of interest to clubs in Saudi Arabia whilst Nunez has been unable to score regularly despite arriving for a huge fee.
